City green spaces to undergo herbicide application

UPDATE: Spraying is held until home owners are properly notified. Also, no spraying in Ridgemont.

May 30 update: The spraying has been put on hold until adjacent home owners are properly notified as stated in the city bylaws. Also, there will be no spraying in the Ridgemont area.

In a committee of a whole meeting on May 15, the City of Fernie approved a one-time exemption to the Pesticide Use Control Bylaw No. 2093, to allow for the application of herbicide in some city-owned spaces.

The application of herbicide will take place between May 31 (tomorrow) and June 2 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the following areas:

  • Max Turyk Community Centre
  • City Hall Courthouse
  • Fernie Aquatic Centre
  • Fernie Memorial Arena and Community Centre
  • James White Park (excluding Tennis Court area)
  • Ridgemont Park
  • Silver Ridge Munroe Cemetery Grounds

Signage was posted at 9 a.m. this morning advising the public to stay off of the turf areas for 72 hours after the application of the herbicide.

The City of Fernie has not effectively controlled weeds on City owned turf areas for over five years, with the exception of a weed control application made to Max Turyk Field in 2016. This herbicide appication was authorized by council.
